India being one of the leading nations of the world requires a large fleet of commercial vehicles to run its developing economy. Commercial vehicles include – bus, car truck, tractor, tempo, taxicab, trailer etc. These can be divided into two categories – Light Commercial Vehicles and Heavy Commercial Vehicles.
Light Commercial vehicles include taxicab and pickup cabs which have Gross Vehicle Mass of upto 3.5 tonnes whereas Heavy Commercial vehicles or Large Goods vehicles are the one with GVM greater than 3.5 tonnes.
Commercial vehicle manufacturing industry in India has been growing since its inception but has registered a positive surge in the recent past. The farsighted vision of the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, led to the establishment of the commercial vehicle manufacturing industry in India. Responding to the call of the Prime Minister, Raghunandan Saran came to forefront and founded Ashok Leyland- the first commercial vehicle manufacturer of India. Soon some of the leading names followed the suite and Indian market saw the influx of Eicher Motors Ltd, Force Motors Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., Swaraj Enterprise/Punjab Tractors Ltd, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd and Volvo Motors among others into the market.
